‘Macaday’ is a family owned and run business that began in a farm kitchen in 1991. Macadamia nuts are supplied by the farm’s own trees and used to produce a range of chocolate coated products. Now a modern and well-mechanised factory supplies customers throughout Australia. The ‘Macaday’ farm and factory are situated in the peaceful, quiet countryside of Wolvi, east of Gympie, on the northern end of Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.
Macadamia Nuts grow on large rainforest trees, native to Australia. They have shiny dark, green leaves, and bear sprays of long, delicate, sweet-smelling white flowers. Each spray of 40-50 flowers produces 4 -15 ‘nutlets’ which will eventually ripen into nuts. The nuts themselves grow encased in a hard, woody shell, which is protected by a green-brown fibrous husk. In its natural state a macadamia tree will have flowers, nutlets and mature nuts growing simultaneously, in profusion for much of the year. Macadamias have a crisp texture and a delicate flavour and as such are a versatile nut. The nuts are delicious and can be eaten raw or roasted, or used in a variety of recipes. They contain mono-unsaturated fats which are known to lower cholesterol levels and decrease the chance of heart disease.
